5 Mentors Small Business Owners Can Turn to For Guidance

May 25, 2022 by Ralf Heyer

Starting your own business can be fraught with challenges, and you may even find yourself questioning your ability to succeed when in the early stages of planning and preparation. This is when having a great mentor to guide and support you, can be extremely beneficial.

Where can you find a business mentor?

Fortunately, the world is full of fantastic mentors, you just need to know where to look. More often than not though, they’re right under your nose and ready and willing to help you.

Here are just 5 of the many mentors you can turn to as a small business owner:

  1. Family and friends

Coming in at number one, are family and friends. While this of course depends upon your relationship with your family and friends, you’ll often find that the people who know you the best, are the people who can help you make some tough decisions and face any uncomfortable truths that might be standing in your way.

  1. An accountant

If you haven’t already hired an accountant, or outsourced your needs to an accounting provider, you should seriously think about doing so, even in the early stages of your business. All too often, their suggestions for funding your business and their financial proposals, can be the difference between a healthy business, and a struggling one. They can determine the financial health of your business, while measuring its performance and even helping with payroll if you have employees, and taxes.

  1. A lawyer or entity management firm

Not only can a lawyer or entity management firm help you establish a business structure, but they can also help you put together a sound business plan and get it registered, too. A lawyer can help you buy a business, aid with startupfinancing and make sure you have the right licensing to run your business, while keeping your intellectual property protected. Should a customer refuse to pay you once you start making sales, a lawyer can collect any monies owed on your behalf. That said, it is important to hire a lawyer who specializes in small businesses, and you may find that the right entity management firm, has a lawyer on their team who can assist you, too.

  1. Recruiters

If you’ve decided to hire employees but don’t know anything about the process, recruiters can help you get started and offer you some invaluable advice. They can help you put together a detailed job description to attract the right candidates, and even help with screening applicants.

  1. Other business owners

Nothing compares to the kind of advice a seasoned business owner can give you, and their perspective may be totally different to any other kind of mentor. Asking advice from those business owners who specialize in your particular industry or niche, can be the most helpful, and in the majority of instances, they’re more than happy to share their insights, recommendations and tips.

Mentors can be immensely helpful in a variety of circumstances, and when you’re starting a new business, their guidance can prove invaluable. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it, anduse their advice to give you confidence and strength to succeed.
