Have you got a great business idea but lack the skills and insider knowledge to pull it off? Well, it turns out that might not matter so much.
While some clueless entrepreneurs who found success simply had luck on their side when trying to get their business idea off the ground, others sought help when they needed it, and were prepared to adapt and overcome any issues that arose.
If you want to start a business but are worried that you don’t have what it takes, here are five tips to help you:
- Get a co-founder with some skills and business acumen
Most people start a business in a field they’re at least familiar with, and those that don’t, typically aren’t successful. However, this may be because they fail to see the value of partnering up with someone who does have knowledge in the relevant field, or are reluctant to for any reason.
If you’re starting a business with no prior experience in that industry, you must find someone to partner with who does, and ideally, they’ll have other skills that complement yours, too.
- Be prepared to watch, listen and learn
Without any business skills, you can’t expect to become a success without doing a certain amount of research and reading up, and wherever possible, listening to experienced entrepreneurs. Studying up on your chosen field is also recommended, even if you can’t commit to doing it full-time, and taking business classes such as leadership training programs, presentation skills and training and management training to name but a few, can all be hugely helpful. Essentially, you’ll be adding to your skills and making yourself better prepared to tackle challenges as they arise, and you can bet there will be plenty of those as an inexperienced entrepreneur!
- Build a network
Networking events are a great way of connecting with other entrepreneurs in your chosen industry, and note that some of the best ones may require you to travel overseas. From fashion and tech, to marketing and music, there will be an event you can attend, and countless opportunities to network and share information and advice.
- Invest in a business coach
While you might want to save money wherever you can as an entrepreneur, it often pays to invest in a business coach, who could help you learn how to run your business far faster than if you were to go it alone. Taking the DIY approach might get you results eventually, but how many profits will you have missed out on, and perhaps more importantly, how much money will you have lost up, until you reach that point?
- Seek support from an entity management firm
Seeking guidance from an entity management company will ensure that your business is set up and registered properly, and in full compliance with all relevant entity laws. Doing so can also protect you and your business from potential lawsuits, which for an entrepreneur, can be financially and emotionally devastating.
If you’re determined to start a business, even without any relevant skills or knowledge, by following the five tips above, you just might be a success. At the very worst, you’ll at least have fulfilled a dream and given yourself something to tell the grand kids about!
