Got no money but got a great business idea? Well, that’s it then isn’t it – not a lot you can do? Actually, no, that doesn’t have to mean that you abandon your idea until such time when you can afford to start a business.
Fortunately, while starting a business with some financial backing might make the road to profitability a little less bumpy, it isn’t an absolute necessity. And, as many entrepreneurs have proven, with a little creativity and a willingness to make sacrifices, starting a business with no money, is entirely possible; here’s how:
- Find a business idea
Whether you’ve got money or not, no business can ever be started if you don’t have an idea for one, and fortunately, ideas are free!
- Try selling your services
If you’re better than the average Joe at doing something, you already stand a greater chance of success than someone trying to start a business who doesn’t know anything about what they’re selling. Look at the things you’re good at, and see if you can’t turn them into a business.
- Try selling your wares
If you enjoy making handcrafted goods (and are half decent at it), why not turn your hobby into a way of making money by selling the things you make online, through marketplaces such as Etsy?
- Sell digital products
Requiring nothing more than an internet connection, selling digital products that you’ve created yourself is a fantastically simple way of starting an online business when you’re strapped for cash.
With eBooks, online courses, worksheets or templates, you can use your superior knowledge to create and sell digital products to help people solve a range of problems. Simply create them once, then sell them time after time on sites such as Shopify.
- Turn yourself into an influencer
Nowadays, more people than ever before are making money through social media channels, and with a little patience, some interesting ideas to share and a sound understanding of social media, you can make a great business for yourself through such things as affiliate marketing, blogging and selling merchandise. Just be sure to take the time to create a strong social media presence for yourself, otherwise you’ll struggle to make a dime.
- Formulate a business plan
The blueprint for any great business, a business plan is essential no matter what it is that you want to sell. While you can formulate one yourself, many opt to seek professional help from an entity management firm to get it right, as this could help you find funding through investors. A solid business plan should include a description of your company, some of your market research, a description of your products and/or services, a marketing strategy and a plan outlining logistics and operations.
- Launch a website
There are still opportunities to launch a website for free, but the real money typically comes in the form of an online store. Tell consumers about what you’re selling, convince them that they need it in their life, and sell it to them – simple!
- Find funding
While the above are all great ways to get ahead in business with no money, if you can find someone to fund your business, so much the better. To help your business stay afloat, it can be immensely helpful to gain some startup capital for building up an inventory, hiring an employee or marketing.
Try options such as crowdfunding, a small business loan or grant, capital investors or a loan from friends or family.
The world of business may be a cutthroat one, but with grit and determination, there are always methods of getting started when you’ve got no cash; the trick is to maintain your business if money doesn’t start flowing soon, and then, to keep it afloat – or better yet, to thrive. Under these circumstances, if cash is still hard to come by, you may need to look for some form of funding to support yourself and your business.
