The Pros and Cons of Changing Your Business Name

June 27, 2022 by Ralf Heyer

There are many reasons why a business owner might want to change the name of their company, but it’s important to carefully weigh up the pros and cons before doing so:

What are the pros of changing your businesses name?

It might be that you had to come up with a name for your business quickly, or you liked the name at the time, but as your business has developed and grown, you no longer feel it suits the brand; whatever your reason for changing your businesses name, here are some reasons to go ahead and do it:

  • The new name could better match your brand

Thinking carefully about a name that aligns with the brand your business has come to represent, will help consumers relate to it better, and more accurately reflect what you do or make.

  • You can target a different demographic

Reinventing your business after a period of uncertainty, or in response to consumer or market demand, enables you to redefine your brand and set your sights on a whole new demographic (and ideally, a more lucrative one).

  • You can leverage your experience

As your business grows and you become more confident of your products and services, you can choose a name for your business that is more appropriate based upon what you’ve learnt since choosing the first name.

What are the cons of changing your businesses name?

You may no longer like your businesses name, or believe it to be an inaccurate representation of your company and brand, but should you change it? Here are some cons to consider, should you decide to change the name:

  • It can be costly and complex

Rebranding your business will take time and money, and there’s no guarantee that doing so will be worthwhile. You’ll have to notify the IRS and local government, while also updating the following:

  • Business licenses and permits
  • Business cards
  • Website
  • Company mail addresses
  • Social media handles
  • Signage

  • You might confuse your customers

Building a reputation as a business and brand takes time, and existing customers may find it confusing or unsettling to discover that you’ve changed your name. Some may not even notice, and when they search for you but can’t find you, they will likely assume you’ve folded.

  • Going back is never easy

If you’ve rebranded your business but the campaign wasn’t successful, you’ll not only have lost a lot of time and money, but you might even have you’re your reputation and your loyal customers, and that’s never good for business.

Changing the name of your business might be a smart move – and if you want to do it, you can work with an entity management firm to make sure everything goes smoothly – but it’s a decision that requires a lot of consideration and serious forethought.
