With so many business opportunities in the U.S. it’s easy to see why many foreigners choose to start one there. However, while it might well be worth the effort, it’s worth remembering that the road to success may not be a smooth one, and that there may be many hurdles to jump over before you even get close to starting a business in the USA as a foreigner.
Before taking the plunge and setting up your own business in the USA, here are a few things to be aware of:
- Your visa status
While you don’t need a U.S. visa to set up a company in the country, or to buy a business that already exists, you do need one if you want to work for the business from within the country.
Without a visa, you can own the business while living in another country and get your share of the profits (and losses), but you will not have permission to work for it from within the USA.
- The language
With most official documents issued in English, and the majority of written and verbal communication related to business carried out in English, being able to speak the language will undoubtedly give you a distinct edge when conducting business in the country.
- Taxes
Taxes are an inevitable fact of life when starting a business in the USA, but there may be some deductions you can claim that will help to relieve the burden somewhat. You may find it worthwhile to work with an accounting professional (outsourcing this may prove ideal) to ensure that you don’t pay any more than you need to, and that you can claim all relevant deductions.
- Business culture
You will need to work with people from different cultural and social backgrounds when starting a business in the USA as a foreigner, and being able to adapt to how business is conducted in the country will help you survive, and ideally, thrive.
- The industry
Do as much research into the type of industry you plan to start a business in as possible, as this will undoubtedly play a significant role in the success of your business.
- The market
Understanding your market is crucial, and in order to offer your target audience what they want, you’ll need to have a deep and detailed understanding of exactly what they want, before you can even begin to know how to give it to them. Reading about the economy in the USA may also help you make a wiser decision as to which type of business to start.
- Accounting requirements
As mentioned briefly already, doing business in another country can be complicated and stressful, and trying to manage your accounts and stay on the right side of the IRS can be a real headache you could likely do without. By working with an accountant from the get-go, you can make sure you’re always compliant, that your taxes are filed correctly and on time, and that you make as many savings in the form of tax deductions that you’re entitled to.
While it’s entirely possible to start a business in the USA and be successful, it likely won’t happen overnight, and there may be many challenges you must be prepared to face. But, by factoring in the points listed above, and being determined to succeed, you stand just as much chance of doing so as anyone else.
